About Carol
I reside in the picturesque Sunshine Coast Hinterland town of Maleny in South Eastern Queensland Australia and stitch from a home studio.
I was born and raised in rural New South Wales into a family of knitters, dressmakers and embroiderers and continue their passion to stitch. I have studied, practiced, researched and experimented with many forms of textile and embroidery using traditional techniques in contemporary ways to showcase my skills. My expertise is 'Free Motion Embroidery' and I refer to myself as an experimental embroiderer and surface embellishment technician.
I use fabric and thread as my medium to design and embroider complex, multi-layered images into one off artworks, contemporary wall quilts and fashion statements.
As a child I spent endless hours deconstructing 'things' and reassembling them. Today I remain as inquisitive as that child endlessly pursuing alternative means to express my designs through stitch.
I soon became aware that to be able to express myself in stitch was not just exciting for me but, would ultimately lead me onto a passion for teaching. I have been professionally tutoring for many years.
My primary focus as an educator is to take a direct, honest approach in sharing my knowledge and experiences, to inspire, instruct and encourage students to step outside the realms of traditional practice and try something new and modern. I encourage my students to enjoy the process of discovery as they find alternative ways of using 'stitches as art'. It is vitally important for students to find their own artistic voice and to develop a distinctive style.
I exhibit and teach extensively both, locally, nationally and internationally.
My current interests remain the passionate exploration of fibre and stitch. My latest work undertakes the challenge of using a single technique and exposing that technique to as many interpretations and alternatives as possible. The outcome will be a contemporary body of work for exhibition. My art is truly taking on a new sculptural dimension.
Times have changed since 'Art was for Viewing and Textiles for Wearing'.
